About
This blog is a reflection on teaching, on education, and on life as an educator.
My name is Greg Cruey, and I teach in McDowell County, WV, at Anawalt Elementary School at the moment. I’ve been at Anawalt since November of 2006. I like to joke that I wasn’t born like normal people; I was issued at a US Army Hospital. My parents are both from here in Appalachia, but I grew up in Stuttgart, Germany, and Augusta, Georgia. After college I spent 10 years with an overseas service organization in Asia, Australia, and the Pacific. I’ve lived in 14 times zones on four continents.
I became a classroom teacher in 2004, at the age of 43. I am an educational interventionist, licensed in Reading (PK-Adult), Special Education (MI-MO, Multi-Categorical, Autism K-6 and 5-adult), Math (5-9), Social Studies (5-9), Elementary Education (K-6), Early Education (PK-0K), and Leadership (Principal, Supervisor of Instruction, Superintendent – PK-12).
In my short career in the county I’ve also worked at War Elementary School, Mountview (both the high school and the middle school), Big Creek High School, and the county’s alternative school, the Phoenix Center.
I am married to an educator (a dear and beautiful woman) who has worked here in McDowell County for almost two decades now.
I’ve been blogging and writing for the Internet for about twelve years now and spent a decade doing it for an online subsidiary of the NY Times Company. Before that I dabbled in print journalism. I have three other blogs and a writing gig that pays me for content that doesn’t really fit into the blog genre…
